The gas at the Esso station was 30 cents a gallon and the attendent pumped it, checked the oil, washed the winshield, and even had a small brush and swept the front floor boards. They gave away key chains, ice scrapers, maps, and travel brochures. We even won a tiger banana bike in one of their give a ways..
The coke machine at the corner shoe store next to the bus stop cost 5 cents and gave you an ice cold 10 oz bottle. There was a lever you pushed that shifted the bottle over to a little door you opened to pull it out.
The bus cost 15 cents, but when I got big enough, I would hitch hike to save the 15 cents, and did not need to wait for the bus.
