Slightly related to the discussion here on shooting stars, meteors, etc., I have a 733 gram piece of "Canyon Diablo" meteorite. It is classified as a IAB Iron and thought to have been originally part of the core of an asteroid. The main impactor created the Barringer Crater, ("Meteor Crater") just out of Winslow AZ. Some smaller pieces were separated from the main bolide while it was traveling thru the atmosphere. These smaller pieces continued to the ground but fell some three miles away from the main impact site. The location is known as Canyon Diablo thus they named the pieces from that. If you google Canyon Diablo Meteorite, you will see several good articles on it and lots of pictures. I haven't switched over to IMGUR yet so my only pics of the meteorite are being held hostage over at you know where.
