Last year about this time I posted about cutting brush in the bowels of the season. The story goes, that if you cut brush in the bowels of the season it will never grow back, problem was we didn't know when the bowels of the season was. Then a fine member of this wonderful board piped in and said as far as he knew astrologically speaking the bowels referred to virgo and was around late august early September. Which sounded correct to us for that is the time just before the sap travels from the leaves to the roots. Interrupting this cycle might just indeed kill the plant. So we tried it on a neglected field that hadn't been cut in 5 to 8 years. Some of the brush was 3 or 4 inches in dia. Well as far as oak, hickory and maple the story is pretty much true. What did grow from the stump was malnourished, stunted and simply looked unhealthy. It doesn't look like any of them will last another year. The birch however was a completely different story. They grew like we fertilized them, some as big as an inch around in one year. We will continue to cut and will let you know the results next year. Almost time to start cutting the gypsy moth damage but that's another story
