I got the engine finished today. Last week I ask for help on a confusing issue on the timing chain on a 1983 AMC 360 CID V8. The book said to install the chain with the crank gear at 6AM with the cam gear installed at 3pm and there should be 10 links or 20 pins between those 2 points but I always installed timing chains with cam gear at 6am and crank gear at 12. Well here is the surprising part (BOTH). ways are correct. I pulled every thing off and reinstalled every thing both ways and turned the engine over by hand and checked the valve timing both ways, both ways are identical as far as valve timing. If you install at 12 pm and 6am then turn the engine over 1/2 a turn the gears end at at the 6am and 3pm point and visa versa. After looking at everything and spending an hour pulling apart and reinstalling I see how that works out. Thank everyone for their input and help on this. It will be a while before the jeep gets run, I convinced the owner to redo the transmission because he told me it wasn't shifting right and now is the perfect time to redo it, not after he puts the engine back in. God bless, Beth and Allen.
