Having used knives all my working years I owned and used an oil stone (3 in 1 case) and all that was used was light mineral oil or light cooking oil because of anything else might get transferred and thus contaminated.My choice was / is light mineral oil but the stones need to be "hot water" cleaned at times to remove particals for better sharpening.Still have these stones and knives and still use them.Sharpening is done toe to heal across front of blade at about 15 / 20 deg angle.
