Then the FTC stepped in and made it illegal to sell a new car in April and call it the following year. After this July 4th became the cross over date. So on July 5th of 1965, that was the 1966 model year. Anything made before July 4th was for that year.
It stayed that way for a very, very long time. Cut to present. The wife's 2005 Town and Country was made in March of 2004. I had the dealer on the phone after that for another matter and inquired about the date in question and got the official "idunno".
Another interesting fact of the '65 mustang is the lack of back up lights not available with the standard transmission.
