Think it was back in '57 or so when Gene Vincent and his Blue Caps (yep, the entire band wore blue tam style caps) came out with "Be-Bop-a-Lula", and to us teens of that era, he was actually more popular than Elvis, who'd emerged in '55 and '56. Carl Perkins came out about then with "Blue Suede Shoes", and he too, along with Little Richard, Chuck Berry and a slew of doo-wop singers are what we listened to. We learned to jitter-bug (and bop) listening to "Raunchy" by another instrumentalist of that time, Bill Justice.
