can't figure it out

Drained the hydro fluid from the Monster's hydrostatic system and changed the filter. I bought a 2-gallon jug of hydro oil that met the hy-tran spec and then...

I cleaned out a quart oil jug. I made a spigot for the cap of the 2-gal container so I could transfer the oil into the quart container. I kept track on a piece of paper how many quarts I transferred and then added to the hydro system. At 5 quarts and a hair more than 1/2 of the 6th quart I stopped adding oil. The manual on the tractor said the capacity was 6 quarts. I started the tractor and ran it for a while and parked it on level ground, waited about 30 minutes and checked the level. According to the dipstick (no, not me) it's telling me it is overfull. What? How the heck? I need to figure this out because with this unit, it says in the manual not to overfill. Anyone else had experience with this issue? I don't want to try draining some out by that may be my only option. My tractor is a Cub Cadet GT2544.
