I was taught by an old maintenance guy years ago that you could filter used motor oil with a cotton rope like what was mentioned already. He also told me that straight 30 weight sold today is simply recycled used oil cleaned up that way. You might want to look into investing in an oil burning furnace as a heat source. The place that does my sandblasting/painting uses one and will give discounts to customers who bring them used oil...beats paying the local Mobil station guy to dispose of it.
