A hemp rope will wick oil. Place used oil in a container above an empty container. Place one end of the hemp rope in the used oil. Dangle the other end of the rope straight over the edge of the container of oil to above the other container. Go away. Over time oil will siphon throught the rope and be filtered. This method was explained to me many years ago by my father. I never tried it, but as poor as he was, I do not doubt he did.

No matter how it comes out, it will not make good bar oil. It lacks tackiness, is too thin and attracts and holds moisture. Left on the bar and chain, it will rust not protect. It is actually designed to attract and hold moisture until the moisture is driven out by heat.
