N simply stood for tractor. A=Ford, J=Industrial application, L=Lincoln, M=Mercury, T=Truck. Later as things evolved D=Falcon, G=Comet, K=Edsel then Comet, O=Fairlane, Torino then LTD II, S=Thunderbird, V=Lincoln after 1961, W=Cougar and Z=Mustang. Most all code systems have since changed with the times.
