I have acquired several of these "plates" (doors, shields) over the years for my project tractors from e-bay, flea markets and with tractors. They were installed for safety. I think not only for spills but to prevent metal funnels and metal gas cans from contacting the battery and hood. A spark could ruin an otherwise sunny day.
