Dennis:

This is a much talked about topic for restorers of early ('39 & '40) N tractors. If you do some archive searches thaere is a lot on this topic. Ford tried two electrical setups using "small" gennies and a voltage regulator for one and a cutout for the second. Evidently, neither generated enough power with the growing popularity of headlights and worklights so the "big" generator came along and remained standard from sometime in 1940 to the end of 2N production in 1947.

"Small" gennies are rare today. An "A" genny is the holy grail for '39 9N restorers. Most all were replaced with "big" gennies when they needed rebuild.

I have two original "small" gennies. Sometimes I am tempted to take them off and put them in my gun safe for the winter.
