The serial should be on the top left of bell housing just behind the starter. Unless the tractor has suffered repeated battery boil over they should be legible. A 641 would have 641 stamped with the consecutive number below it. The Diesel's stampings didn't fair as well as the gas versions because of the big 12 volt battery extended over the stamp area, and the resulting corrosion ate the stampings up. All the gas engine tractors I've been familiar with had very good legible stampings. HTH. SoS
