according to my owner's manual, when the front wheels are in straight ahead position, all backlash should be removed. That, i'm assuming means that you need to have the front wheels in straight ahead position before you do the adjustments. I adjusted mine by just tightening the adjuster screw a little. Then I checked it to be sure I didn't have binding. Mine still has a little backlash but it is better than it was. Hope that helps.
