If the hydraulics are working right added weight won't be necessary. Makes me think something is out of adjustment internally, or a sticky valve.
You should be able to adjust the depth of cut by how low you set the quadrant lever. My 8N has always been easy to set up & adjust, but my 860 is a bit of a pain to use in draft mode, like yours.
