Mike-ga, it sounds like you have the early piston pump with two pipe plugs. The rearward plug is on the suction side of the pump and forward plug is on the pressure side
With the tractor off, if you remove the pressure plug you should see oil. If you remove the rearward suction plug, you will let air into the pump and the oil will drain back into the sump. So you will likely not see oil though the hole.
When you say the lift does not work, do you mean nothing happens when you move the touch control lever with the position/draft control lever horizontal (in position control mode)? Do the lift arms move at all?
I'm thinking 3 possibilities
1. You have completely lost pump prime, but it sounds like you have checked that . You could get a hydraulic pressure gauge, plumb it in and check the pressure. Should come up somewhere in the 2000-3000 psi range. If you pulled the pressure side bleed plug on the pump with the tractor running you should get an oil shower and a 2 hour clean up. Did that happen?
2. Something in linkage is not working properly. Broken, bent, or maybe the cam follow pin finally gave up and sheared off.
3. A stuck unloader valve.
Checking out 2 and 3 requires removal of the top cover. If you do that, change the cam follower pin that comes with Zane's kit and adjust the linkage according to his instructions. Check all the linkage for correct movement.
There are other possibilities, but these 3 are most likely. Pulling the top cover is straightforward, just heavy. An engine hoist will really help. You will need a gasket/o-ring kit. Also, I would use the piston o-ring and back up washer from CNH as well as the unloader valve o-ring. Just my preference.
