I would think that weak springs in the PP would allow it to slip under load rather than cause clutch release problems as the springs purpose is to provide clamping force to the clutch disk. I'm thinking it was a geometry problem somewhere between the clutch fork and the PP levers.
If you changed release bearings, did you compare them before installation?
On to your oil leak - Often the ears of the governor are overtightened resulting in a concave gasket sealing surface. Use 220 Wet-or-Dry sandpaper on a flat surface and wet sand the gasket mating surface back to true and seal with Permatex Fuel Resistant Gasket Dressing & Flange Sealant Part Number 85420
