Cam and Cam Gear/Chrankshaft Alignment

It must be aging that is affecting my ability to get it right the first time. After mating up the Rod Bearing Caps with the proper rods, (the subject of my earlier posts) I reassembled the pan the head etc. When I put the governor back on I used an upper bolt that was too log causing it to extend into the cam gear (made of phenolic or some soft lightweight material)! I destroyed several teeth in the Cam Gear. Dumb!!

I have another engine from which I took an aluminum Cam Gear to do a replacement. Before I button up the thing again, I need to ensure that I have everything properly aligned. I read something that stated the cam gear aligns with the four holes on the camshaft only one way. I aligned the Crankshaft mark with the Cam Gear mark. Before bolting the Gear to the Cam, I rotated the camshaft till the four holes were aligned. I then inserted and tightened the bolts.

Question 1 .... Is that alignment an absolute no-brainer or is there more than one spot during rotation where the alignment may appear right but could be off some small amount.

As the engine now sits all of the pistons are at the halfway point. Number two cylinder's intake valve (the larger diameter of two valves) is open and number 4 exhaust valve is open.

Question 2 .... Does this set of conditions represent proper alignment of the cam and the crank shafts?
