That is the early vane pump that was replaced by the piston pump around 1956. The knob was supposed to adjust the output flow of the pump. There are no parts available to rebuild the vane pump so when it dies you have to replace it with the piston pump which also requires a different hydraulic manifold (the aluminum piece between the pump and the transmission).
