I have a 49'8n converted to 12 volt with a single wire alternator. Before I used my tractor today I noticed the belt looked a little loose so I grabbed a wrench and began to adjust the alternator. I touched something on the alternator with the wrench and some sparks flew. I then realized I forgot to disconnect the battery. When I started the tractor I noticed the amp meter is showing -20 at idle and -30 at half throttle. Before the spark of the alternator as I remember it showed around -15 at half throttle. Did I short out the voltage regulator? Is it safe to run the tractor when the amp meter is pegged at -30 or should I be in the market for a new alternator.
