There is no time like the present to learn to weld.

Assuming you also have a welder's hood, get the welder and a piece of scrap steel out. Depending on how it has been stored you may have to purchase new rod. 6010 is a good starter rod.

Get comfortable and strike a arc. Almost undoubtedly you will stick the rod at first. Twist it off and try again. You may be surprised how soon you are able to get and hold that arc. Practice make perfect and I know of no other way to learn.

Set your amperage about mid range to start. Type and size of rod will determine the proper setting. May want to start on the high side and reduce as you get more comfortable with it.

I don't weld frequent enough any more to stay proficient so have to relearn each time.
