For a hot battery cable I would first check for loose or corroded connection, and make sure the cable does not have internal unseen corrosion. Also I would want the ground cable to go to the heavy main frame of the tractor as near to the starter as possible and not to a light metal framework around a tool box, hood or instrument panel that has to go through corroded rusty bolt connections to get to a good ground.

The ground cable connection to the frame is often the most overlooked and neglected part of the electrical system.

Also make sure battery posts and cable clamps are clean and making good contact
