Tractor will not start

First time I have not been able to pull start my Ford 660.engine will turn over with the key. Smell burning wire.the cable from the negative post to starter button is hot.can you tell from this little bit of information what my problem could be?by starter button i mean the one below the battery not the one by the shifter.
