shifter stuck,,, again

Hi, 1947 built, 8N. Shifter stuck in first gear. Last time I was able to run it in the shop and removed the top cover and slid the plate over to unlock it. It is worn, so I am careful for everything STOPPED before shifting. My question, is there some trick to get that unstuck without removing the top cover, like hold the stick up or down as it is moved, etc.
Also, can that plate that moves the gate be replaced without tearing the transmission apart?
I didn't see how it could be built up by welding with it in the transmission.
