I wonder how many engines left the factory with the pad the serial number is stamped on that did not get machined. I have one in the shop now, 1947 2N. Date code on engine D117, right axle trumpet 4-4-47, left has something but can't read it. Someone did stamp a serial number on the rough cast surface but all I can get is part of the first star, then 9N2?34? and nothing else that I can make out, but the 2 after the n also would indicate 1947 (if there were enough digits).

Anyone seen this before?

Sorry no pictures:-(
