Welcome aboard, Rick! As a newbie the best investments you can make are getting copies of the ESSENTIAL MANUALS. Keep handy, read religiously, and study the archives and HOW-TO's forums here. Get a copy of "75 Tips for N-Owners" by Bruce(VA) and a copy of "WIRING PICTOGRAMS" by JMOR as additional essential documents. Don't know how you are 'testing' things, but I see one problem out the gate. Fist, don't use model year as criteria for verifying things. A '51 8N would have the ANGLE MOUNT distributor and thus point gap is set at .027" +/- .001". You said your point gap is set at .015". Go by whether it is a front mount or a side mount unit. Model years only matter if you are restoring an early model to all original anyway. Next is to avoid guessing to problems. Would of, should of, could of, I think, and tried replacing (fill in the blank) such and such a part. True root cause problem solving is the key to any problem. Whish resistor are you talking about? There is no resistor on a side mount. Don't assume just because you have a 12V battery the system is wired correctly. 99.93% of all non-starting issues are due to mucked-up wiring, and of those almost as many are due to some sort of "12-Volt" switch over job being done. Many times incorrect wiring will drain the battery so have it tested at a shop and while he's doing that, verify the entire wiring system. Use the manuals, OEM 6V/POS GRN setup shown, get 12V from JMOR's Pictograms. Know how it was wired original, then if you have to have 12V, be sure it gets wired correctly as such. Know if you have a front mount or side mount - it matters. Use your VOM set to CONTINUITY to test wiring, never use a test light -you don't want any power to test with. Start here.
