Helps if spark plugs are out. Both tappet covers off. Easy way to turn motor by hand (hand crank, socket and ratchet, extra tight fan belt, crescent wrench on PTO shaft, ...).

Turn motor until you see #4 exhaust start to close. Turn slowly until #4 exhaust valve is almost closed and #4 intake is just starting to open. Stop. #4 is "on the rock" or at/near top dead center between intake and exhaust, and its "twin" #1 is at/near top dead center of compression stroke so both valves are as closed as they are going to get and #1 is ripe for adjusting both intake and exhaust.

Now turn motor 1/2 revolution. #3 is on rock, #2 ripe for adjusting.

Now turn motor 1/2 revolution. #1 is on rock, #4 ripe for adjusting.

Now turn motor 1/2 revolution. #2 is on rock, #3 ripe for adjusting.

Now turn motor 1/2 revolution. double check #1.

Now turn motor 1/2 revolution. double check #2.

Now turn motor 1/2 revolution. double check #4.

Now turn motor 1/2 revolution. double check #3.

If you made any tweaks while double checking, triple check:-)

Note:
If the tops of the adjusting screws are not flat, the actual lash may be more than your feeler gauge would indicate.
