Jerry-

"...I have limited knowledge of electrical circuitry...". Why didn't you seek out the manuals and the electrical system before you tried mucking around with it in the dark. 99.925% of all non-starting issues are due to incorrect wiring. If you don't know what it is before you start, how can you think you just start changing out parts. My post below from the OEM Owner Manual shows the electrical diagram - 6V/POS GRN setup. So, let's start over. Do you have a 12V battery? If so, do you also have an alternator or is the OEM generator and VR in the circuit? If you want to go with 12V, then remove gen and VR, install alternator, go with 12V coil, dump any external resistors, and use this diagram. Don't buy any more parts until it is needed. Don't assume. I am not trying to belittle you, just trying to help -you asked. Bruce and JMOR are the electrical experts here, Ian only pass on what I learned from them.
