The factory specification is 20 amps maximum at 1650 RPM. That will only happen if the battery is fairly low on charge. The amperage can range anywhere from 0 to 20 depending on how much the battery is discharged. The amperage output is regulated by the regulator. If it shows in the negative range, then either the generator is not charging or the regulator has a problem. Also note that if you connect the wires on the ammeter backwards, it will show negative instead of positive readings when it is charging.
