Update: Today I got back to the distributor. I changed the point set, and it made no difference in timing. I have three new CS35 point sets, some dating to 1995, and all three measure the same for rubbing block-to-contact geometry. The used set is also identical.

I decided that I may have distorted the bushing mount on the point plate when I replaced the bushing, so I carefully nudged the bushing mount in the direction of the rubbing block. I got positive results right away, with the timing coming into spec. with the point plate adjuster at the bottom edge of its travel. I quit there, rather than risk binding things up.

As an aside, I discovered that the curved, rectangular, "washer" with the timing marks on it is missing, so I will be putting up a wanted ad for one. I can't find anyone that has a new one for sale. The parts catalog shows it in the diagram, but not in the listings. It should be 18-12174, which has been superseded by 59A-12182A. I may have to make one from scratch.
