Mine did this last year. Running great, pulling a 5 foot shredder. About an hour in it started lugging down like it was going to die. Being about as far away from anywhere to get to tools, gas, etc. I wanted to keep it running. It quit anyway. So, I got off and looked at things, like you were describing.

Solution to mine was opening the fuel shutoff valve another couple of turns. I had been using it with the valve at about three turns open for quite a while. After doing that it ran great again and has done OK since.

Not thinking yours is the same, but that's what worked for me. Why? Well, I don't know but I think maybe the valve is old and cruddy, maybe the screen in the tank is gunked up some. I had a heck of a time getting the thing to stop leaking the last time I had it apart, so the thought was replace it next time. "next time" hasn't come yet though.
