This depends on the type of paint and hardner you are using. In general it makes the paint harder. Drying time is controlled by the use of a reducer.

After you add the hardener, does it cut down on how long your unused paint lasts in a sealed container?

Do not add hardner to the full can of paint. You mix spray batches in a mixing cup and put the mix in your sprayer. Pot life of the mixed paint and hardner is relatively short - matter of an hour or less depending on the paint and temperature. Discard any unsprayed mix and thoroughly clean the spray gun as soon as you finish spraying.
