Perhaps the biggest mystery to some fellas on these N's is the Ford front mount distributor and how to properly set up and maintain them. The first step is to get a reliable set of points and today that is only from 2 or 3 suppliers. One is the CNH set, Made In America, p/n 87744524; next is the Standard Ignition p/n FD-6769-X -available at NAPA; and the TISCO kit. The ECHLIN brand, NAPA p/n CS-35, USE to be good but now are junk as they won't gap open far enough and the plate can't be adjusted to compensate. The CNH and STND IGN are Made in the USA and have the OEM-type phenolic rubbing block. The TISCO kit has the plastic rubbing block but can be gapped properly and will work just fine. The second front mount "mystery" is the cam tangs are offset and thus the unit will only mount ONE correct way BUT if it is forced down 180 off, the second power is applied it will try to orientate correctly and just bust the aluminum base on the unit. At this point (no pun intended)the base is scrap/junk and you will need to replace the base or get out your spare unit.
