Welcome aboard Jessie! It's good to see that you've been doing your homework as well. The Ford tractor front mount distributor is mounted one correct way but you can get it off 180 if you force it. Theersults are as you stated - the base at the cam and weight tang will crack rendering it as junk with no known repair other than to replace the guts with a new base or get a backup unit installed. Bruce offered some installation advice and I'll add that I use a good Mini-Mag flashlight and a telescoping inspection mirror to observe the cam shaft end and match it up with the distributor tang end. Fit by hand into the slot and 'feel' that it is mounted flat on engine face. Hold in place and look to see there are no gaps from mating surfaces. Hand fasten bolts in place and observe flatness again before tightening down. Once satisfied it is mounted correctly, attache plug wires in correct order - 1,2,4,3. The inspection mirror method has always worked for me.
