Rubber seals have been used in automotives for a very long time. The first synthetic rubber was invented in 1903. Neoprene came several decades later in 1930 and was quickly followed by NBR (Buna) in 1934. NBR had better resistance to oil and gasoline and has been preferred over neoprene for automotive and hydraulic seals pretty much since the day it was invented.
