I am putting my 8N back together after replacing the ring gear. The two halves of the tractor are about 1/2" apart, but don't want to move any further. On the advice of others I made up two 6" dowels from threaded rod to guide the two halves back together. I aligned the splines on the transmission shaft by rotating the PTO and that seems to have worked OK. I have also been told not to force things or try to draw the halves together using bolts. I am assuming something is slightly out of alignment, but I don't know what. The back half is currently supported by a floor jack on wheels and the front half on a hydraulic bottle jack. Should I raise or lower either or both halves? Do I need to separate it and try again? Any suggestions are welcome.
