Well just to add to your intellectual headache the universal you bought is also an SAE 80 gear oil. The numbers are actually grade labels not measures of viscosity and the viscosity of engine and gear oil grades overlap. The viscosity range of SAE 30 gear oil is actually on the high end of the viscosity range for SAE 80 gear oil and extends into the low end of the SAE 85 range:

SAE 30 - 9.3 to <12.5 cSt
SAE 80 - 7.0 to <11.0 cSt
SAE 85 - 11.0 to <13.5 cSt
