Yes, I removed mine with the lift cover off and it was not an easy job; of course I only had a propane torch to heat with. With the cover off; I blocked the control plunger so that excessive force was not being applied. With the cover in place, you could try removing the plate and then reach in and try to remove the split pin (cotter pin) that holds it in place. I think I saw on the internet where someone did that. Then with the whole unit out, you heat and work to unscrew.
