Sounds like you have a real PITA. Just keep prodding and poking and trying different things until you get the old gunky seal out. I wish I had some suggestions but I don't. When I put gaskets on the oil pan, I can't remember what I did about the rear; I may have left it in. The engine had been rebuilt so I was thinking it was replaced by the person that did the rebuild. He used the wrong gaskets for the oil pan so that is why I had to drop the pan; it started leaking at both front corners. For the front, I replaced the worn crank pulley and install one of the new doughnut replacements for the front seal.
