Hi Jim,

A float charger can be connected to the battery all the time without damaging it. It will constantly monitor the voltage and top it off when needed and then automatically shut off.
The trickle charger is cheaper, but does not stop charging the battery. If it isn't disconnected when the battery is fully charged it will overcharge the battery and damage it.
I have a few Deltran battery tender's for my 6 and 12 volt battery's
