I think a 50 has the new style steering box.
If so, you have grenaded the upper bearing in the steering column.
Ford steering boxes from the later 8Ns through the mid 1980s are nearly all identical and very, very simple to overhaul.
Pull the steering arms off the sector shafts, pull the steering wheel and remove the entire steering column from the tractor.
Disassemble it completely and clean/wash the bearing debris out of the bottom. Replace the upper bearing and install new sector seals. Then refill with 90wt or John Deere corn head grease.
It will then work good for another 50 years.
As a general reminder to all who read this: When did you last check the oil level in your steering box? Remember, about 90% of steering box problems are caused by lack of oil in that upper bearing. So go check/fill yours soon!
