You replaced the distributor cap and the plug wires. Are you positive you got them in the right places and in the right order? Timing being "way off" makes me wonder.

One thing you should never do is just throw a bunch of new parts at an engine. Best to figure out what is wrong and fix that as there is always the possibility of inducing more problems with the new parts.

The new carburetor in particular is suspect. Likely it is foreign made and they don't seem to worry about quality. You may want to have your original rebuilt.

Everyone seems to be discounting a vacuum leak. I can tell you from sad experience that will create a bunch of weird problems. I had a carb someone drilled an extra hole in. The mounting gasket covered it for years but the gasket got old and started leaking. FUN!
