I've never done this on a 8N. I did replace the top cover on my 2N last summer due to broken parts. The 8N should be slightly easier.

You will definitely need a hoist of some type. I used a come-along. You need to rig a lifting harness so you can lift the cover fairly evenly. I used a chain around the lift arms with another short chain rigged to the front two mounting bolts. Obviously I lifted it slightly to get nuts on those bolts.

Make sure your tractor is on a level surface. Mine tilted sideways which greatly complicated the procedure.

Since I was working alone, I lifted the top and then drove the tractor out from under it. Backed my Jimmy in and laid it on the tail gate to work on it. Reversed the procedure to reinstall.

It's not extremely hard but take your time.
