Every tractor I've split had a few small mystery parts at the bottom of the clutch area. I assume they fished the larger pieces out. When removing the starter the two long bolts that secure it to the engine actually hold the starter end plates and housing together. Try to find a couple nuts to twist on the long bolts as the starter comes off to hold everything together while working on the drive. I'm pretty sure the nuts you need will be 5/16-NC but my memory may be flawed. A big vise helps a lot to hold the starter while installing the pin that locks the drive in place. If no vise, maybe a couple big clamps can be used to hold the starter to something. No way would I buy a whole starter if all it needs is a new drive assembly.
