The shift rails may be locked in place by deposits. I soak stuff like that with PB Blaster to try and loosen the gunk. If it's the detent balls locking the rails in place, rather than simply "pulling" as it says in the manual, a quick rap on the end with a punch should knock it past the detent and still allow you to capture the ball and spring as the rail is pulled the rest of the way out. Of course this is assuming you have the transmission out where you can get to the front end of the rails with a punch. If the transmission is still attached to the engine it should be possible to use locking pliers on the rail in order to have some grip to drive them out. If you don't have soft tips for locking pliers, use some scrap rubber or leather to protect the rails.
