You kind of answered your own question, "...no power unless I move the light switch on and off...". To me that would indicate there is something mucked up in the wiring setup. Is it 6V or a 12V switchover job? If you have spark, then the next step is to first verify that the battery is good -a starter shop can bench test. Disconnect the lights altogether from the circuit, especially if as Tony asked, they are wired incorrectly to begin with. Verify wiring is all correct. Check for spark, then report back here. Note that lighting kits were always dealer optional accessories until the 800 Models, then only headlights were included on a new tractor.
