I think those guys doing the Peterson/Beemer book were just lazy researchers. A look at any of a dozen photos from the Ford archives show the 9N's with 32" hat rims plated. Lots from the 1939/40 New York World's fair show them plated, unfortunately the early ones there, with loop rims, were mostly models from the 77 units built before production and the rims and bolts were painted the same as the tractor.

So only resource is someone who may have found a set of originals with some traces of zinc.
