Yes, man has forever been attempting to match the original Ford Tractor colors. About 15-20 years ago I took the GM Centarri Red paint code that John Smith has on his web site and said he found it to be the closest match to original 8N Vermillion (red). I had my local DuPont/auto supplier pull up the recipe on-line and made me up a batch of it. I painted some of my 8N part with it and was not satisfied. The 'red' was too orangey, much like most every shade of Ford Tractor Red sold today. TISCO sells about 6 Ford Red shades -all with too much orange. The only TISCO paint that matches the original Vermillion is the IH TP110 RED. I painted my '48 8N with it in 2003. It looked perfect. The problem is over time the paint faded and it started looking more like the IH Farmall Red. I still have a pint of the GM Centarri Red left. Best is to do what you did- find a hood or dash that has not seen daylight and go by the shade there. I know Steve Dabrowski found a very good match for his 9N Grey like that.
