Thanks, that describes where I am right now. I was worried about the very heavy engine, and tried to pre-align splined shafts with each clutch disc. I was very happy the extra effort actually paid off. The engine easily slid right into place.
A worn out or missing pilot bearing will cause all sorts of problems. It can eventually destroy a transmission. I have not been able to find any case where a missing pilot bearing "retainer" has ever caused a problem. I have a very fertile imagination, and can't come up with anything. This engine has been turned by hand several times when installing the distributor, and setting valve clearance. The clutch pedal seems normal. I'm confident the bearing retainer can be a wall ornament for now.
